There is no universal winner because “financial data” can mean an exchange quote, an audited filing, a normalized income statement, an economic release, or a crypto market snapshot. We evaluated each option against the job it is meant to perform. A provider earns a recommendation only when the free access is useful enough to test a real workflow and the source clearly explains what the endpoint returns.

1. Coverage that matches the question
A long symbol list is not the same as useful coverage. We looked for the fields a workflow actually needs: adjusted history for backtests, filing periods for fundamentals, release dates for macro series, or exchange identifiers for market data. We also considered whether delisted symbols, corporate actions, restatements, and point-in-time values are available.
2. Freshness that is stated, not assumed
“Latest” can mean real time, 15-minute delayed, end of day, or the latest revised observation. The right answer depends on the product. A research notebook may be fine with end-of-day prices; an alerting product may not. We favor sources that document timestamps, update cycles, and adjustment policy.
3. A free tier that supports a meaningful test
Request limits are only one constraint. Some endpoints consume multiple credits, some plans restrict history, and some permit personal experimentation but not public display. We therefore separate technical access from production rights. “The request returned 200” does not mean the data can be redistributed.
4. Reproducibility and operational fit
Stable identifiers, explicit nulls, consistent time zones, pagination, revision metadata, and bulk access often matter more than a polished SDK. A production pipeline should be able to replay a request, trace its source, detect schema drift, and explain why a number changed.

4. 数据要便于复现和维护

Twelve Data: a convenient multi-asset prototype layer
Twelve Data is a practical starting point when one application needs stocks, foreign exchange, and crypto through a similar interface. Its published Basic allowance is useful for a small watchlist or a proof of concept, but credit cost is calculated by endpoint and symbol. A screen that refreshes many symbols can therefore consume the daily allowance much faster than the request count suggests. Confirm exchange coverage and display rights before treating it as a production market-data feed.
Alpha Vantage: broad functions with a small daily budget
Alpha Vantage offers time series, company fundamentals, economic indicators, technical indicators, forex, and crypto functions. Its official support page states that most free datasets are available for up to 25 requests per day. That is enough for learning, scheduled single-symbol research, or testing a parser, but usually too low for a dashboard with frequent refreshes. The provider also states that real-time and 15-minute delayed US market data are premium-only, so do not label the default free response as real time.
FMP: normalized company data and research-friendly endpoints
Financial Modeling Prep is strongest when the application needs company profiles, statements, ratios, key metrics, estimates, transcripts, filings, and historical prices behind one API key. Its stable documentation exposes more than 100 endpoints and clearly separates income statements, balance sheets, cash flows, as-reported data, and derived metrics. That normalization can remove substantial engineering work, but the exact endpoint availability, history, and quota depend on the active plan. Validate your intended endpoint in the dashboard instead of assuming every documented dataset is in the free tier.
SEC EDGAR: authoritative US filings, not ready-made ratios
The SEC’s data APIs require no authentication key and provide filing submissions plus extracted XBRL company facts. They are the strongest primary source in this list for US public-company disclosures. The trade-off is engineering effort: tags vary across issuers, fiscal calendars differ, amended filings can supersede earlier values, and browser-side requests are limited because data.sec.gov does not support CORS. Use a descriptive User-Agent, follow the SEC’s fair-access guidance, and prefer the nightly bulk ZIP files when collecting large universes.
FRED and World Bank: specialist sources for economic context
FRED is designed for economic series, releases, categories, and observations; its version 1 web services require an API key. ALFRED-style vintage information is especially valuable when a backtest must avoid using revisions that were unknown at the historical decision date. For cross-country indicators, the World Bank Indicators API supports country and indicator queries, date ranges, paging, JSON, XML, JSON-stat, and downloadable files. Neither source should be treated as a live stock-price API.
CoinGecko and exchange APIs: discovery versus execution
CoinGecko is useful for broad crypto asset discovery, market capitalization, market snapshots, and exchange coverage. If the application needs an executable bid or ask, order-book depth, or venue-specific latency, use the relevant exchange’s native API and preserve the venue timestamp. An aggregated market price and an executable quote answer different questions.
Twelve Data:适合快速搭建多资产原型

The best setup is often a small source stack rather than one API. Start with the decision your product must support, then assign one source of truth to each data family. This reduces ambiguous fallbacks and makes discrepancies easier to investigate.

A useful default stack: use a market-data provider for prices, SEC EDGAR for source filings, a normalized fundamentals API when speed matters, and FRED or World Bank for economic context. Keep the original source URL, retrieval time, and transformation version with every stored dataset.

A practical way to test a free financial data API如何用一次小测试判断 API 是否值得接入
Do not begin by importing an entire market. Select a tiny test set that exposes the difficult cases: one active large-cap company, one company with a recent split, one delisted symbol, one non-US security if international coverage matters, and one period containing a restatement or missing value. Store the raw response before transforming it.

Step 1: define the data contract
Write the required fields, units, timestamps, acceptable delay, adjustment method, and null behavior. For a daily price bar, specify whether close is adjusted, which trading calendar applies, and whether volume is split-adjusted. For a financial statement, specify fiscal period, filing date, currency, reported versus normalized value, and restatement policy.
Step 2: make one inspectable request
Use a request that can be copied into a browser or HTTP client. The World Bank, for example, documents a JSON query structure such as https://api.worldbank.org/v2/country/US/indicator/NY.GDP.MKTP.CD?format=json&date=2020:2024. The response is paginated and includes metadata plus observations, so your parser must not assume the first array contains data rows.
Step 3: reconcile against a primary record
Compare several returned values with the issuer filing, exchange notice, or official statistical release. Check dates and units before comparing numbers. A value in thousands of dollars will look wrong next to a normalized value in dollars even when both are correct.
Step 4: force failure conditions
Send an invalid symbol, request a date with no observation, exceed a small local throttle, and disconnect during pagination. Record status codes, retry headers, error bodies, and partial-result behavior. A clean happy path is not enough to design a reliable ingestion job.
Step 5: estimate real quota usage
Model symbols × endpoints × refreshes × users, then add retries and backfills. Cache shared requests and fetch immutable history only once. If a free plan cannot support the measured workload, use it for evaluation and budget for the appropriate production license rather than building around evasive key rotation.

第五步:按真实用量计算额度
用“标的数量 × 接口数量 × 刷新次数 × 用户规模”估算请求量,再加上重试和历史回补。多个用户需要同一份数据时应共享缓存,不会变化的历史数据只抓一次。如果免费套餐支撑不了测算后的负载,就把它用于评估,生产阶段购买合适授权,而不是依赖轮换密钥规避限制。

Identifiers
Ticker symbols are reusable and exchange-specific. Preserve CIK, ISIN, FIGI, exchange MIC, or the provider’s permanent instrument ID when available. Build an explicit mapping table instead of joining every dataset on ticker alone.
Time and calendars
Store source time, source time zone, retrieval time, and the normalized UTC value. Do not fabricate bars for market holidays. For economic releases, distinguish observation date from release date and revision date.
Adjustments
Keep raw and adjusted prices separate. Record split and dividend factors, and know whether a provider rewrites history after a corporate action. Never mix adjusted close with unadjusted open, high, and low values in one calculation.
Lineage
Save provider, endpoint, parameters, response timestamp, schema version, and transformation version. This makes a changed valuation or backtest result explainable months later.
License
Review internal use, commercial display, redistribution, derived data, model training, caching, attribution, and retention separately. “Free API key” describes price, not necessarily usage rights.
Monitoring
Alert on stale timestamps, sudden null rates, row-count changes, duplicate observations, unit shifts, and schema drift. A 200 response with yesterday’s data is still a failed real-time update.

Describe the capability, then inspect the tool
Ask for the business task—such as retrieving a company’s latest filed revenue or comparing an economic series across countries—rather than assuming a provider name. Inspect tool descriptions, required parameters, and returned fields before sending a production request.
Keep validation outside the routing layer
Your application should still enforce freshness thresholds, symbol mappings, units, allowed licenses, and reconciliation rules. Routing selects a capability; your data contract decides whether the result is acceptable.
Design explicit fallbacks
A fallback should be equivalent in meaning, not merely available. Replacing an adjusted daily close with an unadjusted intraday trade, or a filed GAAP value with an estimated metric, silently changes the answer. Record which source fulfilled every request.
